The Guide
In this guide
When a 3-tab shingle roof in Townsend, DE starts losing shingles in the wind, the next question is usually what to put on when you replace it. Roof replacement is our main service, and in Townsend we have seen exactly this. In Odessa National, the homeowner had moved in knowing the roof would need replacing, and the older 3-tab shingles had begun blowing off.
We replaced that roof with Owens Corning Duration architectural shingles in Driftwood and hung new 6-inch seamless aluminum gutters (our Google Business Profile post on the job, read October 2, 2026). This guide covers how to tell which shingles you have, how 3-tab and architectural shingles compare, and what goes on a Townsend roof replacement with us.
How to tell 3-tab shingles from architectural shingles
Stand across the street and look at the rows. Wikipedia's asphalt shingle article describes 3-tab shingles as essentially flat, simple shingles with a uniform shape and size. Each strip is cut into three tabs, so the roof reads as even, repeating rows.
Architectural shingles, also called dimensional or laminated shingles, are a multi-layer, laminated shingle. The pieces vary in shape and size and leave more distinct, random shadow lines, which is why the roof looks textured from the street.
3-tab vs architectural shingles, side by side
The figures in this table come from Wikipedia's asphalt shingle article, not from a test of any one roof. How long a real roof lasts depends on how it was installed, the ventilation and the weather it sees.
| 3-tab | Architectural | |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Flat, one uniform shape and size | Multi-layer, laminated |
| Look | Even, repeating rows | Random shadow lines |
| Weight | Thinner and lighter | Heavier and thicker |
| Typical life | Replaced after about 15 to 18 years | About 24 to 30 years |
| Cost to install | Lower | Higher, with longer manufacturer warranties |
Why an older 3-tab roof starts losing shingles
Each shingle has a self-sealing strip on its underside that holds it down against the wind. Wikipedia notes that the strip only forms a proper bond after sunlight and heat soften the asphalt.
Once a gust breaks that bond, the tab lifts, creases and eventually tears away. On the Odessa National roof in Townsend, the older 3-tab shingles had begun blowing off.
Wind damage is not only a 3-tab problem. In the Parkside neighborhood of Middletown, a roof with builder-grade shingles had wind damage over and over before we replaced it in Owens Corning Duration (our Google profile post, August 11, 2026).
Repair or replace a 3-tab roof in Townsend?
A few blown-off shingles do not always mean a new roof. Our Google reviewers describe us replacing blown-off and missing shingles as a repair, and one says we found another missing shingle and fixed that too.
When the shingles are coming loose across the whole roof, patching turns into chasing the next one, and replacement is usually the better answer. We photograph the roof by drone during the free inspection, so you can see the condition of every slope and decide with us. If a repair will hold, our roof repair page explains how we handle it.

What goes on a Townsend roof replacement
On a roof replacement, the old shingles and underlayment come off down to the wood deck, so the deck can be checked before anything new goes on. We offer three packages, all in Owens Corning shingles:
- Fortress Core: Owens Corning Oakridge shingles.
- Fortress Shield: Owens Corning Duration, the one most homeowners pick.
- Fortress Elite: TruDefinition Duration or Berkshire designer shingles with upgraded underlayment, hip and ridge cap, and an ice and water barrier upgrade.
Both of our published Townsend roofs used Owens Corning Duration, one in Pacific Wave and one in Driftwood. A replacement comes with a lifetime manufacturer warranty, so ask us for the written warranty terms for the system you choose. Financing is available; ask about it at the inspection.
