Local Expertise

Serving the Odessa Community

  • Roofing in an old port town

Odessa began as Cantwell's Bridge, where a toll bridge over the Appoquinimink opened in 1721, and grew into a port shipping grain and produce to Delaware Bay. A significant part of the town is now a historic district. We would not assume any two roofs here are alike, so we inspect, photograph by drone, and show you what is actually on yours.

  • US 13 through the middle, DE 1 at the edge

US 13 passes through the heart of Odessa, northbound on 5th Street and southbound on 6th, and DE 299 is Main Street. DE 1 follows the western edge of town, with an interchange at DE 299 that serves both Odessa and Middletown. We come in on DE 299 from the Middletown area, and wherever the house sits, you get the same visit: drone photos of the roof and a plain account of what they show.

Common Roofing Challenges in Odessa, DE

Odessa dates to the 18th century, a significant part of it is a historic district, and it lies along the Appoquinimink River. On a roof here we would start with age and water.

  • What is under the shingles. Odessa was founded as Cantwell's Bridge in the 18th century, and a significant part of the town is a historic district. Shingles on a house of that age can be nailed to spaced boards or patched planks, with no plywood under them at all.
  • Chimney flashing. An old house may have one or more masonry chimneys, and every chimney is a flashing detail. That flashing can separate, rust or deteriorate, and repairing it is work we have published.
  • Damp at the eaves. Odessa lies along the Appoquinimink River, and a little of the town's small area is water. Wood that stays damp can be slow to dry, so on a house near the river we would look closely at the roof's edge: fascia and the decking above the gutters.
  • Wind and coastal storms. The creek that once carried Odessa's grain runs down to Delaware Bay, and Delaware gets coastal storms and nor'easters. Blown-off and missing shingles are among the repairs our reviewers describe.
  • Repairs stacked on repairs. A house old enough to have seen Odessa's grain trade may have had several roofs and many patches. We sort what we find into what must be done and what is only a recommendation.

Most of this is hard to see from the ground on an older house. Our drone photographs it, and the inspection in Odessa is free.

About the Area

All About Odessa, DE

Odessa started as Cantwell's Bridge, named for a toll bridge opened over the Appoquinimink in 1721, so a house in the old part of town may carry its roof on framing built long before plywood. The town became a port that sent wheat, corn, tobacco and produce down the creek to Delaware Bay.

When the railroad was built through Middletown in 1855 instead, the grain trade collapsed, and the town took the name Odessa in an effort to stay a major port. A significant part of the town is now a historic district, and on older houses there we check the flashing and decking before anything else.

For roofing, age changes the questions. A house from the 1700s or 1800s went up before synthetic underlayment or ice and water shield existed, and the roof on it today is unlikely to be its first.

Permits for work in Odessa go through the Town of Odessa Building Permits.

More about roofing in Odessa

The shingles may sit on spaced boards, on older layers, or on decking patched by several owners. When a tear-off exposes the deck we show you what is there and you choose how far to go.

Odessa is small, about four tenths of a square mile, set along the Appoquinimink River with a little of its area under water. US 13 runs through the heart of town, northbound on 5th Street and southbound on 6th, and DE 299 is Main Street. Wood near a river can be slow to dry, so on an Odessa roof the perimeter may deserve extra attention: fascia, eaves and the decking just above the gutter line.

We are the roofer from the next town over. We are family owned and work out of the Middletown area, a short run west on Middletown Odessa Road (DE 299). The work we have published in Middletown shows what we install: a Parkside roof replacement in Owens Corning Duration Williamsburg Gray after repeated wind damage, and a second replacement in Evergreen Mist.

I enjoyed working with Randy. Great price. Great work. He was punctual and his crew completed the job in one day. His crew spent close to an hour making sure the property was cleaned up after the job was finished. Randy was on sight during the day to inspect and provide updates on progress. He walked around the job with me upon completion to make sure I was satisfied with the work and clean up. Would highly recommend.

I had Randy from Home Fortress come out to take a look at my roof to make sure we were still in good space after all the storms this year. I really appreciated that he was honest and didn’t try to sell me a whole new roof when I didn’t need one. He found a few loose shingles and some nail pops, took care of the quick repairs, and explained everything clearly. It was refreshing working with someone who was more focused on fixing the problem than making a bigger sale. If you’re looking for someone who’s knowledgeable, easy to work with, and trustworthy, I’d definitely recommend Home Fortress.

I had an exceptional experience with Randy and his team from start to finish. The team is professional and courteous, and the project was completed on time. Randy communicated clearly every step of the way and answered my questions immediately. My roofing work was done with safety at the forefront and the work area was kept clean. It's refreshing to work with a company that values customer service, high-quality workmanship, and clear communication. I highly recommend Randy and his team!

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions: Roofing in Odessa, DE

Have you done roofing jobs in Odessa, DE?

Not one we have published, and we will not describe a job we cannot source. The nearest published work is in Middletown, about three miles west on DE 299: two roof replacements in Owens Corning Duration. Until there is an Odessa job to show, judge us by what the free inspection shows you about your own roof.

Do you take on roofs in Odessa's historic district, and which roof types?

We do asphalt shingle roofing and flat roofing, plus repairs such as chimney flashing. A significant part of Odessa is a historic district, and a house there may have a roof of another material; tell us when you call and we will say honestly whether it is work we take on. We cannot tell you what the listing allows on the exterior, so ask the Town of Odessa about that before you plan the job.

Does the Appoquinimink River affect roofs in Odessa?

It can. Odessa sits along the river, and wood that stays damp can be slow to dry, so the places to watch are the fascia boards, the eaves and the decking above the gutters, where rot can start. New gutters and gutter guards are on our service list and carry water away from that edge, though we do not clean gutters.

Is a roof inspection free in Odessa, New Castle County?

Yes, and so is the estimate. We come to you from the Middletown area on DE 299, which is Main Street once it reaches Odessa. You get drone photos of your roof and an explanation of what is a must-do and what is only a recommendation; call (302) 314-1025.

Is Odessa too small or too far for a roof repair visit?

No: Odessa had 366 residents at the 2020 census and is about three miles from Middletown on DE 299, which makes it one of the closest towns to us. Small repairs are part of our work, and reviewers describe us fixing blown-off shingles, loose shingles, nail pops and a roof leak. Call (302) 314-1025 during our hours, Monday to Friday 8 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 2 PM.
